La luz de la poesía sigue brillando en Medellín
En el mundo turbulento y fragmentado de hoy, la poesía se ha vuelto más vital que nunca.
No es solo un arte del lenguaje, sino el aliento del alma. Cuando las guerras, el odio y la división se extienden como sombras, solo la poesía puede cruzar fronteras y despertar la ternura, la esperanza y la empatía que nos hacen humanos.
El Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín es un símbolo de ello: un encuentro luminoso que deja que el poder de la poesía brille a través del caos, recordándonos que el futuro del espíritu humano no puede existir sin poesía.
Tuve el honor de participar en este festival de renombre mundial, un viaje que se convirtió en mucho más que una experiencia literaria. Fue un viaje del corazón, un diálogo entre espíritus. En Colombia, y especialmente en Medellín, redescubrí la verdadera misión de la poesía y, por primera vez, llegué a comprender el alma de esta ciudad.
El nombre de Medellín resonaba en los titulares mundiales junto a palabras como violencia y miedo. Sin embargo, cuando pisé su suelo, descubrí algo completamente diferente: una ciudad rodeada de montañas, llena de colores, música y amor resiliente. Medellín se ha levantado de sus heridas a través de la cultura y el arte. Hoy en día no es conocida por su dolor pasado, sino por su renacimiento poético — una transformación que revela, de la manera más hermosa, el poder curativo de la poesía misma.
Durante el Festival, leí junto a poetas de todos los continentes, escuchando el ritmo de los idiomas y el pulso de diferentes almas. Incluso cuando no compartíamos la misma lengua, nos entendíamos a través de la emoción, a través de nuestro anhelo de paz, dignidad y compasión. El Festival de Medellín no es solo una celebración de la poesía, es una revolución del corazón, un santuario para nuestra humanidad común.
En aquellos días, deambulé por la Plaza Botero, la ciudad de las flores, los murales de las colinas y el sereno Parque Arví. Vi cómo el arte florece incluso en lugares que antes estaban marcados por el dolor. Los colores, la gente, los ojos de los niños... todo se convirtió en luz dentro de mis poemas. Esos poemas capturaron no solo mis impresiones, sino el espíritu mismo de Medellín: su valentía, su ternura, su renacimiento de la oscuridad al amanecer.
Lo que me conmovió profundamente es cómo estos poemas, ensayos, fotos y vídeos que creé durante el Festival resonaron en todo el mundo. A través de las redes sociales, miles de amantes de la poesía de diferentes países me escribieron diciendo que les había conmovido la belleza y el espíritu de Medellín y que ahora deseaban visitar Colombia.
Mis vídeos sobre Colombia y Medellín han alcanzado más de un millón de visitas. Muchos lectores me han dicho que fue a través de mi poesía que vieron por primera vez la verdadera Colombia, no solo como una tierra de café y ritmo, sino como un país de arte, fe y esperanza.
Esta respuesta me ha llenado de gratitud y responsabilidad. Me di cuenta de que la poesía no es solo una expresión personal, sino un puente entre culturas. Acerca corazones distantes y transforma los malentendidos en entendimiento. El Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín es uno de los puentes más brillantes del mundo, ya que muestra no solo el alma literaria de Colombia, sino también su valentía para sanar a través de la belleza.
Por lo tanto, hago un sincero llamamiento al mundo: el Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín debe preservarse.
No solo pertenece a los poetas, sino a la humanidad misma. Es una parte vital del espíritu cultural de América Latina, un faro en el panorama poético mundial. Perderlo sería apagar una luz que guía la conciencia de la humanidad. Defenderlo es defender la dignidad del alma.
La poesía es la conciencia del mundo.
Medellín es su tierra sagrada.
Con todo mi corazón, presto mi voz, mis palabras y mis acciones a esta causa.
Porque, como escribí una vez: «Un poeta no puede cambiar el mundo, pero la poesía le da al mundo la oportunidad de redimirse».
Que la luz de la poesía de Medellín siga brillando con fuerza en la oscuridad de nuestro tiempo.

The Light of Poetry Continues in Medellín
In today’s turbulent and fragmented world, poetry has become more vital than ever.
It is not merely an art of language, but a breath of the soul. When wars, hatred, and division spread like shadows, only poetry can cross borders and awaken the tenderness, hope, and empathy that make us human.
The Medellín International Poetry Festival stands as such a symbol — a luminous gathering that lets the power of poetry shine through chaos, reminding us that the future of the human spirit cannot exist without poetry.
I had the honor of taking part in this world-renowned festival — a journey that became much more than a literary experience. It was a journey of the heart, a dialogue between spirits. In Colombia, and especially in Medellín, I rediscovered the true mission of poetry and, for the first time, came to understand the soul of this city.
The name Medellín once echoed in global headlines alongside words of violence and fear. Yet when I set foot there, I discovered something entirely different: a city embraced by mountains, filled with colors, music, and resilient love. Medellín has risen from its wounds through culture and art. Today it is known not for its past pain, but for its poetic rebirth — a transformation that reveals, most beautifully, the healing power of poetry itself.
During the Festival, I read alongside poets from every continent, listening to the rhythm of languages and the pulse of different souls. Even when we did not share the same tongue, we understood each other through emotion — through our longing for peace, dignity, and compassion. The Medellín Festival is not merely a celebration of verse; it is a revolution of the heart, a sanctuary for our common humanity.
In those days, I wandered through Botero Plaza, the flower town, the hillside murals, and the serene Arví Park. I saw how art blooms even in places once marked by sorrow. The colors, the people, the children’s eyes — all became light within my poems. Those poems captured not only my impressions but the spirit of Medellín itself: its courage, its tenderness, its rebirth from darkness into dawn.
What touched me deeply is how these poems, essays, photos, and videos I created during the Festival resonated across the world. Through online sharing, thousands of poetry lovers from different countries wrote to me, saying they were moved by Medellín’s beauty and spirit and now wished to visit Colombia themselves.
My videos about Colombia and Medellín alone have reached over one million views. Many readers told me it was through my poetry that they first truly saw Colombia — not only as a land of coffee and rhythm, but as a country of art, faith, and hope.
This response has filled me with gratitude and responsibility. Poetry, I realized, is not only personal expression; it is a bridge between cultures. It brings distant hearts closer and transforms misunderstanding into understanding. The Medellín International Poetry Festival is one of the world’s brightest such bridges — showcasing not just Colombia’s literary soul but its courage to heal through beauty.
Therefore, I sincerely call upon the world: the Medellín International Poetry Festival must be preserved.
It belongs not only to poets, but to humanity itself. It is a vital part of Latin America’s cultural spirit, a beacon in the global poetic landscape. To lose it would be to dim a light that guides the conscience of humankind. To defend it is to defend the dignity of the soul.
Poetry is the conscience of the world.
Medellín is its sacred ground.
With all my heart, I lend my voice, words, and actions to this cause.
For as I once wrote: “A poet may not change the world, but poetry gives the world a chance to be redeemed.”
May the light of Medellín’s poetry continue to burn brightly across the darkness of our time.
